Research & counts

- SCOS / Special Committee on Seals (UK) — International reference for grey seal research; relevant because the Dutch population is part of the North Sea metapopulation.

How we deal with uncertainty
Counts are snapshots with built-in uncertainty: an aerial count only captures the animals that are on the sandbar at that moment, and even standardised correction factors differ between sources. When two reputable sources differ significantly in a figure, we give a range or quote the most recent official figure with a date. Pages with population figures are checked at least annually after the official counts.
